HDPE: Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

Conditionally UV-resistant: The material will eventually become brittle if exposed to excessive and prolonged radiation.
Difficult surface: HDPE cannot be printed on, cannot be glued and is difficult to paint. Many paints do not hold on to it.
Settings
In order for HDPE to be printed with acceptable quality, the settings should be correct during printing. These depend in detail on the printer used, the slicer software and the quality of the HDPE used. Nevertheless, it is possible to give a rough orientation.
HDPE is generally printed at somewhat higher temperatures. These are around 240 degrees Celsius to 280 degrees Celsius. At lower temperatures, the material does not flow evenly through the extruder. At higher temperatures, there is an unpleasant development of smoke, and the fumes are toxic.
Make sure that the print bed is sufficiently heated. Cooling down is often associated with problems with HDPE: The shrinkage rate is very high compared to other materials, and HDPE is not self-adhesive. With a heated print bed, the HDPE remains stable and is kept warm long enough for the individual layers to bond together at least to some extent. Shrinkage then starts later, when the printing process is complete and the model cools down. A Bowden extruder is not as well suited for printing HDPE as direct drive extrusion. This has less to do with the settings, but should also be considered if there are problems with printing. This is because HDPE is softer and more elastic than some other filaments and could be problematic with retraction.
HDPE support structures
You have two problems with 3D printing: support structures are necessary, but are difficult to remove. HDPE is available cheaply and is a relatively “clean” material solution in terms of the plastic cycle, but it cannot be printed cleanly. This is because HDPE tends to warp, shrinks extremely, and the individual layers separate from each other again when they cool down.
If you have dual extrusion, direct-drive extrusion and a heatable print bed at your disposal, as well as a slicer that can handle it all, the solution is obvious: you build the support structures from HDPE. The material is robust enough to act as a support structure for online 3D Printing services.
